How to express disagreement without alienating coworkers? Simple wording and phrasing can improve your results.
1) Instead of saying, “Do it this way”, try saying, “You might want to consider this,” or “Have you considered looking at this in another way?”
2) Eliminate the words “should” and “shouldn’t” . Try saying, “ How does this sound to you?”, “What about this?” or “Have you thought about that?”
3) Seek to understand, then be understood. Really listen before you react. Ask, “Am I hearing you correctly?” or “Just to clarify, you are saying…” This can be difficult, but can help communication! (Steve Wyrostek MBA, BA)
